A Great Way to Start the New Year - Cycling Adelaide

Before I get back into work mode, thought it'd be great to ramp up my cycling, so with the aid of one of my favourite iPhone apps BikeBrain Lite…

I started the week, Sunday 2012-01-01 with a great ride down past the Sturt River Linear bikeway - just the thing needed to clear out the cobwebs from the previous night's activities.

Day 2 didn't according to plan, shortly after setting out at the Athelstone end of the River Torrens Linear Park bikeway, I happened along a group of joggers who didn't wish to share the path which unfortunately resulted in some "nice" battle scars…

After having an unplanned rest-day 3, Tues. 2012-01-03, started moderately early in the morning with a ride down to Glenelg from Hallett Cove to meet friend, fellow trainer & this morning's riding partner.

Yesterday, Thursday 2012-01005, saw a more leisurely ride part way along the Encounter bikeway along with friends and their kids. Great scenery and a great day was had by all…

So far this week, I've traveled 92.17 kms; an average (ride time) speed of 14.7 kph and saved the environment 14kg CO2 offset… not a bad start for the year

My time as AUGI BoD...

Wow, it certainly hasn't seemed like six fantastic years… but my time as an AUGI BoD is almost gone. Without doubt, it has become a milestone event in my life and it has become extraordinarily clear to me is that there are so many committed and talented people doing wonderful work in their respective trades and industries and all for the benefit of the AUGI Community.

I certainly plan to stay connected to AUGI in some ways and look forward to 2012 with excitement as I explore new opportunities and broaden my horizons…

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated staff and volunteers who are the backbone of this great organisation and the AUGI Board of Directors, both past and present, who have provided me with guidance and support during these last six years.

The "Stick Shed"

On the weekend I had the pleasure of visiting the famous "Stick Shed" in Murtoa, a small town north-east of Horsham in Victoria’s western district.

This area of Victoria is predominately a wheat and wool farming community. Ordinarily, wheat after being harvested is stored in grain silos wheat before being sold for either domestic consumption or export. However, in 1941, when the "Stick Shed" was "born", Australia and the world was at war. War didn’t just deplete the number of available hands to assist with the harvest, it also closed off most of Australia’s export options. When combined with an exceptionally-good season, the farmers of Murtoa had a real problem on their hands because suddenly there was an oversupply of wheat grain and no-where to store it.

Enter the “Stick Shed”, officially the Marmalake/Murtoa Grain Store No.1 Murtoa Shed. In 1941, building supplies and labour were in exceedingly short supply so the shed’s builders had to use the few building materials available.

Typically for this type of construction, a system consisting of steel columns and rafters would be used to support to roof structure however non of these materials were available.

To support the roof the builders embedded close to 600 unmilled hardwood poles into a concrete floor, then strengthened it with iron tie rods before attaching a corrugated iron roof. The ‘Stick Shed’ measures a massive 280 metres in lenth, 60 metres in width, 19 metres in height at the ridge and 2.4 metres in height at the internal eaves. That’s enormous!

As guessed, it is the large amount of poles that give the “Stick Shed” its name.

The “Stick Shed” was used by the Victorian Grain Elevators Board (now GrainCorp) until the late 1980s when the condition of the shed and improved handling regulations rendered the “Stick Shed” economically unviable. There have been numerous versions of the “Stick Shed” constructed around Victoria in the 1940′s but all have since been demolished - thankfully this fate has not befallen to this amazing building.

Thankfully the Heritage Council / Heritage Victoria started a programme of restoring the shed, which was in a poor condition. In places, the roof is missing and some of the massive timber poles and other timber elements were rotten and needed replacement.

The Heritage Council held its first open day earlier this year in May 2011 and approximately 450 people view. Last weekend, another open day was arranged so that members of the public could see the “Stick Shed” for themselves and an estimated 1000+ people viewed this amazing building...

The “Stick Shed” is a vast size and much bigger than I ever imagined it to be. The concrete floor was dusty, there was still debris in many places and there was a large hole in the roof in the middle section of the building. As I wandered around, I could hear pigeons roosting above my head and evidence of tons of bird droppings on the floor. On one side of the shed was a long conveyer-belt that had long ago seen better days and notices warning of certain poles being dangerous were attached to various columns. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful building to wander around and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would encourage all to view this magnificent building.

The Stick Shed is one of the MUST PRESERVE at all costs spaces in Australia - this building is of such historical and significant importance and aesthetic beauty inside.

Kudos to the Heritage Council / Heritage Victoria for the ongoing restoration work and to the volunteers who manned it on the open day - well done!

Certainly without any hesitation, serving on the AUGI Board, has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've had the pleasure to do… The last six years (3x 2-year terms) has been amazing… I've learnt lots, met some amazing peoples and thoroughly enjoyed myself and would highly recommend the experience for any individual AUGI Member wishing to become more involved…

Nominations are NOW open and this could be just the beginning of what could be the start of a fantastic, rewarding experience for any hardworking volunteer…

AUGI members will be given yet another way to be involved with AUGI. You can do this either by nominating someone for the Board of Directors or throwing your own hat into the ring for the next term.

Being an AUGI Director requires some work, effort and carries responsibility but it offers many rewards as well. So how do I apply, you ask. All the details, can be found on the AUGI website, located here

If you are considering running, please keep in mind that the Board of Directors usually meets 3 times a year with one meeting coinciding with Autodesk University. These face to face meetings may take 4 days or more of your time (these may include time away from work and possibly Saturday and Sunday) and there are monthly conference calls in which you are expected to prepare for in advance and actively participate in. The conference calls are currently scheduled for the third Saturday of the month for approximately 2 hours, but have been known to exceed that duration. The times of these meetings may vary based on the board members location.

Life's Little Mysteries, part 2

Further to this post I now have a biopsy result. Earlier today, my specialist's advised me I have Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL).

When asked about its aggressiveness… advised it is totally non-agressive and is an uncommon subtype of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). This disorder is differentiated from all other forms of HL, which are commonly referred to as classical Hodgkin lymphomas (CHL), by characteristic pathologic and clinical features.

NLPHL represents a more indolent disease than CHL, and is therefore managed uniquely. Since this disease is rare, most information concerning treatment and outcome has come from reports of single institutions or pooled, multi-institutional retrospective analyses.

It is their understanding that patients with NLPHL may not require as aggressive therapies and that the treatment standard of chemotherapy followed by involved-field RT that has been used in CHL may not be appropriate for NLPHL. So for the time being, it is my choice to watch and wait...

Life's Little Mysteries...

Ago after my glorious holiday away during May-June, my doctors advised on a recent routine blood test, an slightly elevated calcium levels were present… this gave cause for concern thinking it was most likely an enlarged parathyroid gland…

So, late June-early July off I go to get an ultrasound scan of my neck, which revealed no enlarged parathyroid however it picked up another lump…

Now I needed a CT scan which the preparation can mess with my diabetic meds – just all I need… so off I go to have this CT scan and then the drama begins…

Now mid July, my local GP refers me to a specialist who doesn’t tell me the test results but she wants to review the scan with others before discussing options with me… At that stage I was advised I had Stage 3 Lymphoma.

I got jack of that approach and contacted another specialist via my GP who thought that approach was just plain stupid and promptly scheduled a biopsy of the lump which was wedged between my carotid artery & jugular – just the area you want someone digging around with sharp objects…

Now the waiting begins in earnest… 2 weeks later with little sleep and literally the day before I plan to go back to the US (for AUGI meetings) I see the surgeon dude again to get results and remove stiches… Well the stiches got removed but they have no results as yet... bloody hell, the suspense is starting to get to me but trying to stay positive…

All that was said that is was probably a Lymphoma, although its type was still to be determined. So at that time, I was still uncertain of potential outcomes...

OK, the day after I get back from the US, off I go to the Lymphoma specialist - they still have no effin’ idea on what it is... it has been sent to the foremost Lymphoma specialist in the country (and one of the world's top 10) and we're still waiting on his conclusions. Apparently he hasn't decided yet what it is yet.

It has been suggested that it is probably a lymphoma that lives in the body, causes no harm, and as my specialist commented that if I feel good then I'm probably am...

If “its” not causing me concern then we shall not interfere with it…

In the meantime, don't call us, we'll call you...

So we wait and, in the meantime, go on with our lives

In reality that is the best news I had… J

Autodesk have released a Revit Add-In Hotfix…

In continuing effort to provide high quality products, Autodesk has released this hotfix which provides an update to the Revit Vault add-in.

The README file highlights how to install this hotfix and other important information regarding this update.

When using Revit with the add-in for Vault, occasionally the program will suddenly terminate during some vault operations.

An error message may be seen containing the text, "Revit encountered a System.AccessViolationException".

Thoroughly enjoyed another great ride yesterday from Glenelg North (aka "the Coast") along the length of Adelaide's River Torrens Linear Path bike track through the city and up to Athelstone (aka "the Hills).

Mind you I was rather surprised I had the cross the river on this bridge - an un-nerving feeling travelling across this with your bike… The hills and the headwind slowed me down a bit but thoroughly enjoyable...

An 80th Birthday party we wont forget...

Wow! What a night to remember!!! But definitely not what you're all thinking. A group of us were celebrating a friend's Mum's 80th Birthday this evening were a vast majority of the group had travelled from Melbourne just for this occasion. Having read the advertising "blurb" of the Snooty Fox Restaurant, located in North Adelaide (see below), it was thought that this would be an ideal place to celebrate in…

I must say it certainly was memorable…

After having pre-dinner drinks at the bar, we where pointed in the direction of our table for the evening, and it was quite picturesque sitting "under the vines". After perusing the menu with little help from the inattentive "waiter", our orders were eventually taken. Our waiter proceeded to what looked like re-writting everything out again on another piece of paper… who knows??? What seemed like a long time, he eventually proceeded to the kitchen…

After a while, food started appearing, with mine serving of Salt n' Pepper squid being amongst the first to arrive, along with other pasta dishes - all stone cold!!! I must admit I was far too hungry and most likely low in blood-sugar levels too care - I needed food!!! One of our diners waited patiently and when asked about his "fish of the day" he was told that he'd have to wait as his order got mixed up!!! The waiter was told to cancel that order and then magically with a few moments his "tepid" fish dinner arrived…

We informed the other waiting staff about the lack of service, and state of the food presented and but the night was yet over…

We had brought along an exquisite layered cake for the birthday girl, which the restaurant offered to cut up and serve… unfortunately the cake whilst getting into the kitchen area safely, didn't make it out that way and went crashing to the floor after being dropped by staff.

This was when we demanded to see the manager, who happened to be "our waiter". We were gob-smacked!!! To their credit, after listening to us, the offered to pay for all meals which we accepted and got the heck outa there pronto!!!

The coffee and cakes down the road @ Fellini's was simply devine :)

An update on the year so far...

OK, so I haven't really posted much this year, as it sorta got messy late January when whilst out enjoying my Sunday morning bike rides, a motorist decided to lend a "not-so-helping hand" and gave me nudge which resulted in road vs. me = road won…

It would've been nice if they'd stop to make sure I was still breathing….

Thankfully some other cyclists came to my aid who checked me out just to make sure I roughly knew where I was…

Apart from some major skin scraps on my left side, I had also damaged my left knee.

To cut cut a long storey short, I had minor knee surgery just over 1 month ago and improving every day, with returning to cycling 2 weeks taking it fairly easy.

I returned to my Sunday morning bike rides once again, although mainly been sticking to bike tracks.

Last Sunday I ventured out with my new iPhone along with an "app" to map out and give me some stats on my rides. Up until now, I sort of guessed how far I had ridden using the SA Govt's Online Cycle Instead Journey Planner which was OK but a bit "clunky".

However, this time around I used "BikeBrain Lite" - a free app for the iPhone, which turns your iPhone into a easy-to-use cycle computer and gives you GPS mapping, speed, distance, altitude, elapsed time and many other data parameters.

Happy New Year everyone…

As one of the organising committee, it is with much pleasure to all invite all Building Designers to attend the upcoming Building Designers Australia’s National Conference and Design Awards evening to be held in the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort 7-9 April 2011.

This will be a very eco-focused conference and will incorporate activities to celebrate the BDA movement being 50 years young in 2011.

The conference program will include plenary sessions highlighting current technical and policy innovations with concurrent sessions covering energy efficiency, BIM and other trade related informational sessions.

We trust that besides partaking in the conference you will have the time to experience the relaxed atmosphere of one of Australia's premier wine districts, the Barossa Valley and the surrounds.

Wow, I can't believe I'm been so busy since arriving in Las Vegas on Sunday morning to blog about #AU2010... its been almost non-stop

Project Vasari technology preview Is Now Available

You can download Project Vasari via Autodesk Labs here

Project Vasari is a design tool with analysis capabilities available via the cloud. Project Vasari is compatible with Revit in that files created by Project Vasari can be opened using Revit 2011, and Revit files can be opened by Project Vasari. There are some limitations in that, as a conceptual modeler, Project Vasari does not support some features (e.g., detailed model elements such as walls, windows, doors, etc.) The thinking is that you would start with Project Vasari and then continue with Revit 2011 to make more detailed models - not the other way around.

In a nutshell… Project Vasari it's basically Revit for people who don't need all of Revit.

Its Nominations time again at AUGI.com…

Nominations are NOW open and this could be just the beginning of what could be the start of a fantastic, rewarding experience for any hardworking volunteer…

AUGI members will be given yet another way to be involved with AUGI. You can do this either by nominating someone for the Board of Directors or throwing your own hat into the ring for the next term.

This year, after election each Director will take on a Directorship role. A directorship is a specific manager of a unique area of AUGI administration. Under these directorships are the programs that are either managed by the directors by them directly or though a program director who reports to them.

Nominations need to be submitted to the AUGI Nominations and Elections Committee no later than October 20, 2010 midnight US CST in order to be considered for the ballot.

Protection for my Mac

I finally got around to doing something about protecting my Macbook Pro - and it arrived to today… seeing how I missed out on getting an "IronMan" decal for my mac, I set about getting Gelaskins

I can't believe how easily it was to install… highly recommended.

If you can't find any designs that they have (…and I found too many) you can upload an image you want…

Now if only I could get this pattern in printed material to make a vest I'd be a very happy Mac-ite :)

Safari Update...

Fixes an issue that could prevent users from submitting web forms
Fixes an issue that could cause web content to display incorrectly when viewing a Google Image result with Flash 10.1 installed
Establishes an encrypted, authenticated connection to the Safari Extensions Gallery

Friend & fellow Mac-ites, Rick Graham (of MacACAD blog fame) posted this great useful tip earlier this morning…

Registering for AU with a Mac.

A quick tip -

If you are using your trusty Mac to log into the Autodesk University Registration page and it seems to get stuck, chances are – you are using the default Safari to do this. I have commiserated with other fellow Mac-ites trying to the same and we all came to the consensus that AU Registration hates Safari. So, I fired up Firefox (and the other person used Chrome) for Mac and all went through fine without a hitch.

So, use something other than Safari to register.

For the record, I was "Chrome" user - sadly the AU registrations site is not Safari friendly :(

The word is out… Autodesk have announced that it is bringing AutoCAD back to the Mac…

“The release of AutoCAD for Mac marks the return of professional design and engineering software to the Mac platform and an important convergence of power and design," said Amar Hanspal, senior vice president, Autodesk Platform Solutions and Emerging Business. "Over 5000 customers have helped develop this product through our beta program and they are delighted to have the choice of a native Mac version of AutoCAD.”

AutoCAD for Mac sports an intuitive, Mac-like interface that includes graphical browsing of design files with Cover Flow, use of Multi-Touch gestures on Mac notebooks, and use of the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad for pan and zoom. AutoCAD 2011 for Mac works on Intel machines running OS X 10.5 or OS X 10.6.

This is an update to the Autodesk Solar Radiation Technology Preview for Revit 2011, fixing a number of important issues. If you have already installed the previous technology preview, you will need to uninstall that version before installing this version.

iTunes Music Analysis

I was catching up on reading on some favourite blogs, when I came across this interesting article that Scott Sheppard of "It's Alive in the Lab" fame posted some time back. In response to one of his blogs about analysing your iTunes music, another blogger Jason Pratt sent him this link…

Free Download of Super Analyzer 2.1 from SourceForge which is fine if you're a PC user… but if you're a Mac user, I figured there'd have to be something similar about… and there's probably plenty about but the one I used was this… Super Analyzer (Mac)

As per the PC version, its a Java Runtime program that requires no installation and will extract all the information from your iTunes to produce graphs and charts on your music library. You'll be able to see the evolution of genres, tracks you like, or highest playing times. Super Analyzer will also let you know the most played, highest rated songs and includes a whole list of count stats.

The application only takes a second to launch and generate graphs, though unfortunately you won't be able to play around with the data and arrange the graphs the way you want.
Similar to the PC version, it does provide some interesting data… It would appear, I most listen to music @ 3pm… Hmmm, probably an afternoon wake-up session
It would appear I like Rock the most…

Whilst I thought I hadn't rated any of my music, it seems I had/did and my highest rated Artist is Avenged Sevenfold but only my third most played… most curious

Adelaide 2011 Autodesk Product Launch

Wow, what can I say…. it was certainly a hectic day yesterday at times, being the "local paparazzi" at the two Adelaide Autodesk 2011 Product Launch's. The morning session, where Lynn Allen gave her presentation was hosted by KarelCAD at the Adelaide Crows Training Facility at AAMI Stadium, West Lakes. Great job Shane, Craig & the guys…

No sooner than Lynn's session was over, we were travelling to North Adelaide for IMAGINiT's hosted launch at North Adelaide. Thankfully, both were a great success, great job Phillip, Michael & the IMAGINiT team.

When Lynn Allen last "toured" Australia, she visited me in hospital and the positive vibes that visit provided was truly amazing… for that, when Lynn mentioned that she wanted a brief break from her hectic busy speaking/travelling schedule whilst promoting the Autodesk 2011 Product Launch around Australia & New Zealand, I was only happy to show her a small sample the best of what South Australia wines have to offer…

We started in the Adelaide Hills Wine region and yesterday toured the Barossa Valley and along the coast of suburban Adelaide, where Lynn finally got to "meet" Jedi, our "baby".

I now looking forward to Lynn's presentation on Wednesday April 21 - if you're in Adelaide be sure to attend the Autodesk 2011 Product Launch (or April 20 in Perth or April 22 in Melbourne).

Lynn Allen rocks Adelaide AND coincidentally an "earthquake / tremor" measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale has shaken my home town, Adelaide last Friday night.

WOW, I can finally say "Lynn Allen has rocked my World…."

OK, I've been stuck in meetings the past few days and I missed the public webinar that Autodesk broadcasted to give everyone a quick look at what's new in their software portfolio…

From various blogs around the globe (thanks to Steve Stafford's Revit OpEd for the graphic & info), information is rapidly appearing on all the new and improved features of the upcoming New Release of Revit 2011. From the Revit3D blog, one can gleam a whole vast wealth of information, videos and PDFs . And David Light's Revit Blog has a great summary of what's new in Revit 2011.

The Board of Directors is the governing body for AUGI. Board members are involved in long-range planning, vision casting, high-level management and, most importantly, positive member interactions. The Board is responsible for the overarching direction of the organization. Board members possess a passion for Autodesk products and services and they are committed to sharing knowledge amongst the AUGI membership.

Just a few days remain to cast your votes for candidates running for open positions on the AUGI Board of Directors. Click here to become familiar with the candidates and vote. The ballot is a Ranked Ballot. Each person on the ballot can receive a yes or no vote. A maximum of eight (8) yes votes will be allowed per ballot. Each name is voted on individually. Those candidates receiving the most votes will be elected to the Board. Elected candidates will serve for a two-year period from January 2010 through December 2011.

Well the sun is finally starting to shine in Las Vegas, this cold & chilling morning in Las Vegas. Autodesk University 2009 is all over but the AUGI Board of Directors are still open...

It certainly was a hectic week, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. I'm still sorting out the tons of photos I took in readiness to post some here after getting back home.

Hopefully I'll see you all again next year @ AU2010 :)

WoW its almost time to go home...

Wow doesn't time fly when you're having fun... since landing in Orlando almost 4 weeks ago, we've had a magical experience with Disney Cruise Lines and the Disney Magic / Caribbean Cruise. If you ever get the chance, you simply must experience the magic of a Disney cruise... it was simply fantastic :)

Since then, we've been based in Cumming, Georgia and venturing to far away places like Chickamauga & Chattanooga, Atlanta and environs to name a few... I'll post some images once I've organized them a tad more...

Having arrived in Orlando, FL late Monday night we've hit the ground running seeing Disney World (Epcot & Hollywood Studio parks), the Florida Mall (our Hotel is adjacent) and today made a huge killing at the Premium Shopping Outlets :)

Revit Update 2 available

From information gleamed from the AUGI Forums and Twitter earlier today...

The Update can be applied to all languages of Revit Architecture. Currently, only the English download page has the update, but the other language download pages will be available by the middle of next month. Until then users with other languages can download the update from the English page.

Please note, the update release does not contain any new functionality. However, we are developing functionality enhancements that will be available to Subscription customers in the near future. All of the fixes that are in Updates 1 & 2 will be included in the functionality enhancement release, so if you need to update a large number of seats it may be best to wait until it is released unless there is a fix that you absolutly must have.
